Are You Sleeping, Brother John?

oldmanroad yentha

Kerala continues to be the state with the highest alcohol consumption rate. So this old man, well past 60, lying at a sidewalk in the city, in broad daylight is not something people stop and wince at. It is as common as a strike, a harthal, a gathering around a tea shop, a street beggar, or any other image that one might associate the state with.

Then again, this could be a man drowned in the sea of poverty - with no place to sleep, famished with hunger. That is again, nothing that would raise a brow. Poverty is yet another image that needs no explanation.

But as this fragile old man lies there unattended, with no one to even wonder if he is breathing or not, if he has fainted and fell, if he had an accident, it makes you wonder if getting used to the ways of our little state meant not caring a hoot about anyone else - unless it is something to talk or hear ill of.

But knowing our ways, in all likeliness, this man would wake up a couple of hours later when someone nudges him to clear the place. He would wake up, stretch his arms wide, yawn loudly and walk away.

What is the solution? I have seen this several times, and rarely in other cities. How can we help such people? Good work Yentha.

Thank you Ramesh Babu. An ideal solution would be to bring some regulations, posting guards to make sure a scene like this is prevented. But that might result in the poor lot - which is indeed a huge number in India - ending up with no place to go. As for the drunk, it may make a difference, provided Kerala starts the habit of respecting law.
