Parking Curbs Begin On Vellayambalam-Sasthamangalam Road

Trivandrum: Steps to transform Vellayambalam-Sasthamangalam road into a 'model' road has begun. On the first day police earmarked certain stretches for parking and sealed the other areas with tapes and cones. Unassuming commuters who parked at these spots, often knocking down the cones in the process, were informed and instructed by the cops about the change.

Though the efforts will help in streamlining traffic as intended, public, especially the shopkeepers are apprehensive about the move. "The only thing it ensures is me losing my customers," said Aswin Mambra, studio owner, whose shop now stands in no-parking zone.

The drive was a success in MG Road partially because it had open parking lots readily available. The Vellayambalam-Sasthamangalam road lacks open parking lots and on the first day, many two-wheelers were seen parked well inside the footpath, over the grass, which can impair the look of 'model road' in long run.

"By law all commerical establishments here are required to have their basement area reserved exclusively for parking. That law should be strictly implemented to make this drive a success," said, Pradeep, CEO of a private company.

Police will also be checking for helmetless riding, driving without seat-belts, use of mobile phones while driving and will ensure maintaining of  road discpline as part of effort towards making the stretch a model one.
