Trivandrum: Sree Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma Chithralayam is located inside Rangavilasam Palace near Vettimurichakotta in East Fort. In this museum is on display a vast array of paintings and photographs (about half of them by Uthradam Thirunal Marthanada Varma) that brings out royal life from centuries ago to recent past in close, personal way.

Many of the photographs that have been put on display are not available on internet and so photography is strictly prohibited. Every picture and every photograph carries an information plank with all necessary details written on it. Option for a multimedia presentation of the pictures is also available.

The pictures and paintings bring out royal life in all its grandeur and at times in all its simplicity as well. Some of the pictures taken by Uthradam Thirunal Marthanda Varma  won't look so out of place in today's Facebook if not for the difference in fashion.


A visit to this museum is a visit back to era of kings and queens in all its glory  The museum is located within the Rangavilasam Palace and so the ambience is excellent.



The museum is a treasure of information regarding the history of royal family of Travancore, starting from 18th century's King Marthanda Varma to some as recent as 2007. Officials here say most vistors to this museum are from outside state, or country and less from local populace.

The Chitralayam is open on all days except Monday, from 9 am to  1 pm and 3 PM to 5 pm. Entry fee is Rs 15 and shoes are not allowed inside.
