Trivandrum: Kerala Cricket Associations's (KCA) first class cricket venue at Thumba is beautiful and unique. The ground is lush green with nine wickets to play on and is bigger than the ground at Greenfield Stadium. It is the only venue meant exclusively for cricket in Trivandrum.
The Thumba cricket ground is situated close to the sea. Officials cite that as an advantage since it ensures maximum light hours for play. According to players, the pitch tends to favour fast bowlers in mornings.
For now, the gallery is not much to speak about. But the plan is to elevate the mud and plant it with grass to make for a simple and elegant substitute to permanent galleries. The lack of availability of gravel is what is delaying the project.
"The BCCI has received a very postive response from the players who played here last month. This is one of the best venues that KCA has in Kerala and we are hoping to host a Ranji match next year," said Vinod S Kumar, district cricket association secretary.
KCA has the ground leased out from St Xavier's College for a period of 10 years which can be extended. Officials are hoping sponsors will come forward to install floodlights in the venue as well.
Presently the venue is hosting inter-district matches. If everything goes according to plan, the fans may be able to watch a Ranji match, while sipping a cool drink, relaxing on green grass underneath the shade of some 600 trees that has been planted around the venue.
