Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary and Dam

  • Peppara is about 50 kilometers from Trivandrum city, en route to Ponmudi hill station. The sanctuary is spread across 53 sq. kilometers of dense forest and eucalyptus plantation. The Peppara Dam built across the Karamana River adds to the scenic ambience of the sanctuary.

     

    The sanctuary’s vegetation ranges from sub tropical forests to tropical evergreen forests and has large hills and numerous hillocks with Eucalyptus plantations. The sanctuary houses tigers, panthers, leopards, wild dogs, lion tailed macaques, elephants, gaurs, sambhar, barking deers, mouse deers, wild boars, Nilgiri langur, and Malabar squirrel. There is also a collection of different varieties of birds - water birds such as darter, little cormorant, pied kingfisher, egrets and more.

     

    The region is known for its snake species especially king cobra and python. Moths and butterflies of fascinating varieties are a common sight at Peppara. Outside of wildlife, the sanctuary is also home to 13 tribal settlements. A boat ride along the site is a fulfilling experience. Although Peppara is open all year, the main season is from January to May.

     

    How to reach:

     

    Peppara falls on the Trivandrum - Ponmudi road. Buses are always available in this route.
