Ponnumthuruthu (Island)
    Place:
  • Varkala
    Location :
  • Trivandrum
  •  Ponnumthuruthu, an uninhabited island in the Anjengo backwaters near the city to lie under the shades of sprawling trees.

The Siva-Parvathy temple, more than a century old, is the major surprise within the dense foliage in the island. The loudly painted temple building can be a bit of a visual noise against the ancient forest. You would desperately want a dilapidated building on its place. “It was like that until a few years ago,” says Muraleedharan, a member of Valiyapurakkal family which owns the island.

Watch your steps carefully as the marshy ground sometimes give in if you move to the margins of the verdant island.

    How to get there

You have to reach Varkala, which is 35 kms from the city. The delightful getaway is 20 kms from here on the Kadakkavur Road. Ask for Onnampalam. From here it is a long walk to the kadavu, where a country boat can take you to the island.  If you are on a good day, a paddle of ducks may meet you here.  In about ten minutes, you could take your first steps on the emerald island.
